Choosing a tile adhesive can be difficult for the newbie. Always ask your supplier for advice and be sure to read the label of any adhesive you are planning to use. It never helps, however, to do some background research so that you understand the information being given to you and feel prepared to ask the appropriate questions.

Here is some information about how ceramic, stone and vinyl tile adhesives are categorized and labeled to help you make the right choice.
Classifications of Tile Adhesives

Tile adhesives fall into three categories: Type C (Cementitious); Type D (Dispersion) and Type R (Reaction Resin). Here are some of the b
(Type C) Cement-based Adhesives

Cement-based adhesives come in the form of dry powders that are mixed with water. Once set, they are usually unaffected by water so are often a good option for use in wet environments. If you want to color your adhesive (for example if you are not using grout) then you can buy a powder colorant for use BEFORE you add water to the adhesive. You can also buy liquid colorants for use after you’ve hydrated the adhesive. Some cementitious adhesives can be mixed with additives to give them extra properties like more strength or greater flexibility, etc.
(Type D) Combined Adhesive and Grout

For the experienced, using an adhesive/grout combination is rarely advisable except for the smallest and simplest of jobs. Inevitably you need to make　compromises if you choose this option, as what is desirable from a grout is not necessarily a wanted property in an adhesive – and vice versa. It does have the advantage of being incredibly easy to use however; so consider it if this is your first tiling adventure and the job isn’t too ambitious.
(Type D) Acrylic or PVA-based Adhesives

These are premixed adhesives. They are by far the most common adhesives for wall tiling, as it’s easy to use, and also to clean up should there be any spillages. They set by drying naturally through water loss. Avoid using this kind of adhesive anywhere where there will be a lot of moisture or unusual heat.

You can also buy water-resistant (which is not to say “water-proof”) varieties of PVA-based adhesives for non-commercial use in bathrooms
and showers.
(Type R) 2-Part Resin Adhesives

These come in two parts, to be mixed by the tiler on site.　One part is the resin while the other is a hardener. If you did not already know this, then you should probably not pursue this option, as two-part-resin adhesives are usually difficult to use and expensive to buy. Even for experienced tilers, this is an option typically reserved for particularly difficult situations or very specific needs.
Vinyl Tile Adhesive

If you are using vinyl tiles then the previous information may be of limited use for you. The tiles are likely to be self-adhesive, in which case you should not need to use anything extra. If they are not, and of course you should check before you buy, then purchase some vinyl tile adhesive (specifically for floors, if this is what you are using them for). It sets fairly quickly and is of course very sticky, so if you mess up a tile, be ready to whip it back up quickly!
Other Tile Adhesive Classifications

In addition to the types laid out above, extra characteristics are also described by these numbers and letters:

1: normal adhesive
2: improved adhesive
F: fast-setting
T: adhesive with reduced slip
E: extended open time (cementitious adhesives and improved dispersion adhesives only).

For example, and adhesive labelled D2F would be a fast-setting dispersion adhesive with improved adhesive properties. Memorizing these will certainly make it seem that you mean business when you speak with your supplier.

In case you were wondering, “open time” is the maximum space of time after an adhesive is applied, at which tiles can be embedded in the adhesive and still meet the stated bond strength requirements.

This information should help you clarify what you are looking for before you choose an adhesive. Without the right adhesive, your tiling project is doomed to failure so, while choosing the tiles
may be more interesting and fun, the adhesive choice is, if anything, even more crucial.

Identification: UniBond All Purpose Floor Tile Adhesive, and Grout are grey cement based,
ceramic floor tile adhesive, and grout products. The product is supplied as
separate adhesive, and grout sachets in a cardboard outer.
Manufactured by Henkel Consumer Adhesives.
Uses/Applications: UniBond All Purpose Floor Tile Adhesive, and Grout is suitable for bonding, and
grouting ceramic floor tiles and mosaics in damp or wet service conditions. It is
also suitable for dry service conditions and is resistant to cracking in joints up to
3mm thick.
Limitations/Misuse: Not suitable for worktops. Do not allow grout to set on the tile face.
Description:
Composition: Grey cement, sand and other additives.
Physical Properties:
Appearance:
Adhesive Coarse grey powder.
Grout Slightly coarse grey powder.
Odours: None.
Performance:
Fire: Non flammable and non-combustible.
Water: The grout is suitable for general interior wall tiling including bathrooms, showers
and in permanently damp or wet areas.
Chemicals: Resistant to petrol, oils and weak alkalis, etc. Not resistant to acids.
Biological: Contains a preservative and does not support the growth of bacteria or fungi.
Thermal: Once cured it is unaffected by temperatures up to 120°C. Between 120°C &
400°C it will lose strength and will disintegrate above 400°C.
Durability/Reliability: Indefinite depending on conditions of use.
Compatibility with
other products: Compatible with most building surfaces.
Working Characteristics:
Rheology: Easy spread viscous paste (when water is added).
Working time: 2 – 3 hours.
Cure time: Normally 24 hours should be allowed for the tiling adhesive to dry before
grouting.
Ensure adhesive is dry before grouting. Grout hardens in 1 to 2 days, full cure in
14 days.
Cure Type: Hydraulic setting.
Temperature Range: Do not apply at temperatures below 5°C. Frost free conditions are required
during curing.
Coverage: Coverage will depend on application, but as a guide.

Standard – Up to 9 sq.ft Large – Up to 18.9 sq.ft.
Trade – Up to 38.7 sq.ft
Shelf Life: At least 1 year in unopened bag. Use as soon as possible after opening. Do not
store in damp conditions or in open bags.
Architect’s Specification Clause
The grout to be used shall be UniBond All Purpose Floor Tile Adhesive, and Grout. It shall be used and
applied strictly in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
Health & Safety
The material is safe in normal use. However, with any material, good hygiene practices should be followed:
Avoid inhaling the dry powder. Avoid contact with the eyes, and if contact occurs, flush with copious
amounts of water for ten minutes. Avoid prolonged contact with the skin (may cause skin irritation). Keep
away from children and animals. People with sensitive skin should wear rubber gloves. This product
contains a fungicide. Follow pack instructions.

dentification: A mould resistant ready mixed thin-bed adhesive for fixing ceramic wall tiles and mosaics
which is also used to grout the tile joints after fixing. Non-slip. Enables walls to be tiled
without the need of battens, fast setting (allowing tiling and grouting the same day) and a
good white colour. Water based, waterproof, non-flammable. Fixes tiles to plaster,
concrete, wood, paint, brick, plasterboard.
Manufactured by Henkel Consumer Adhesives.

Uses/Applications: UniBond All Purpose Ceramic Wall Tile Adhesive and Grout may be used for damp or wet
service conditions and will adhere to a wide variety of backgrounds. Used for tiling
showers and around baths and wash-basins. Additionally it may be used whenever a
conventional, non-waterproof, ready to use tile adhesive would be specified.
Limitations/Misuse: Not suitable for swimming pools. Should not be used as water barrier or near fireplace
openings. Internal use only. Not a flexible adhesive.
Compliance with Henkel Consumer Adhesives is certified by DQS (Certificate Registration
standards number : 003052 QM/UM) as a company operating a Quality Management System to BS
EN ISO 9001:2000, BS EN 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
Description:
Composition: A filled acrylic copolymer emulsion, with fungicide added
Colour: White.
Physical Properties:
Appearance: Smooth paste.
Odours: Slight odour whilst the adhesive dries.
Performance: Structural, Mechanical
UniBond Advanced All Purpose Wall Tile Adhesive and Grout conforms to the
requirements of BS EN 12004 Class D2E.
Fire: Non-flammable.
Water: When the adhesive has dried it is water resistant and will withstand water immersion.
Suitable for showers, splash-backs, etc.
Chemicals: Resistant to petrol, oils, weak alkalis, etc. Not resistant to acids or aromatic and ketone
solvents.
Biological: Contains a preservative and does not support the growth of bacterial of fungi.
Thermal: Suitable for service temperature up to 80°C.
Durability/Reliability: In dry or intermittently wet conditions – indefinite.
Compatibility with
other products: Compatible with most building surfaces.

Working Characteristics:
Rheology: Easy spread viscous paste.
Working time: Tiles may be placed up to 20 minutes after spreading the adhesive.
Cure time: Can grout as little as four hours after fixing tiles on a porous background. Allow 8 hours
when tiling onto non-porous surfaces. In normal conditions full bond strength and water
resistance is achieved within 14 days. Adhesive must be able to dry through. Showers,
etc, however, are normally usable two days after grouting.
Cure Type: Water evaporation.
Temperature Range: Do not apply at temperatures below 5°C. Frost free conditions are required during curing.
Coverage: 0.9 sq metres per litre if spread by notched trowel. Approximately 0.3 sq metres per litre
as 3 mm bed. (Coverages given are for fixing and grouting).
Shelf Life: At least 24 months in unopened containers. Protect from freezing.
Architect’s Specification Clause
The adhesive to be used shall be UniBond All Purpose Ceramic Wall Tile Adhesive and Grout. It shall be used and
applied strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
